SUSTAINABILITY & ACCESSIBILITY

Novotel & Mercure Darwin Airport Resort: Leading the Way in Sustainable Hospitality

We are thrilled to announce that Novotel & Mercure Darwin Airport Resort has been awarded the prestigious Sustainable Tourism Certification by Ecotourism Australia, solidifying our commitment to a greener and more responsible future. As Australia’s first-ever airport resort and only the second hotel in Darwin to receive this certification, we are proud to stand as pioneers in sustainable tourism, not just locally, but on a global scale.

A Commitment to Sustainability

Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword for us—it’s at the heart of everything we do. Our journey towards becoming a leader in sustainable tourism began with the thoughtful redevelopment of the Novotel and Mercure hotels into a cohesive resort, under the guidance of our owners, Airport Development Group (ADG). This transformation was driven by a deep commitment to environmental, social, and cultural sustainability.

Key Initiatives Driving Our Success

At Novotel & Mercure Darwin Airport Resort, we have implemented a series of innovative initiatives that align with our mission to minimize environmental impact while enriching the local community and preserving Indigenous culture:

Biodiversity and Habitat Restoration: We’ve established a program that prioritizes Indigenous ecological knowledge, ensuring our restoration efforts align with Indigenous cultural values.

Climate Change Mitigation: Our Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Plan, developed with data from CSIRO and the Bureau of Meteorology, guides us in identifying risks and opportunities under a changing climate.

Solar Energy Investment: We’ve made extensive investments in solar energy, aiming to meet our net-zero greenhouse gas emissions target by 2030. In the next three years, we plan to reduce carbon emissions from operations by 20%.

A Gateway to Indigenous Culture

Our commitment to sustainability goes beyond environmental efforts. We have made it a priority to honor and integrate Larrakia Aboriginal heritage and culture throughout our resort. From the stunning Larrakia Welcome to Country mural at the resort’s entrance to the carefully curated art and information displays across our property, we offer our guests an immersive experience that connects them to the rich history and culture of the Northern Territory.

Engaging Our Guests in the Journey

We believe that achieving our sustainability goals is a collaborative effort, and we invite our guests to join us on this journey. Whether it’s reducing waste, being energy-efficient, or exploring our Indigenous cultural programs, we encourage our guests to be part of the positive change. One highlight is the Gurumbai Cultural Trail, created in partnership with Larrakia custodians. This self-guided walk allows guests to explore the unique flora and fauna of the region and learn about its cultural significance.

A Sustainable Future for All

As General Manager Chris Chaffe proudly states, "At Novotel & Mercure Darwin Airport, sustainability is more than a goal; it is part of our identity and the way we do things." Our dedication to sustainability not only aligns with the growing expectations of today’s travelers but also contributes to the Top End economy and the future of tourism in the region.

Receiving the Sustainable Tourism Certification is a significant milestone, and we are committed to continuing our efforts to create a positive impact on the environment, the community, and our guests. We look forward to welcoming you to our resort, where sustainability and luxury coexist seamlessly, offering you an unforgettable and responsible travel experience.
